Cosmologically, the Void are the uninhabited regions of (non)existence outside Time and Creation, the absence of the Flame Imperishable, as it is told that Melkor used to wander in the Void to look in vain for the Flame Imperishable.[1] The Timeless Halls of Ilúvatar are apart from the Void; Eä is created amidst the Void but is not a part of it.[1] After his defeat in the War of Wrath, Morgoth was cast out into the Timeless Void "through the Door of Night beyond the Walls of the World",[2] but legends predict that he will return to the World and cause its End. The Void thus in that context refers to the vast distant empty spaces of Eä. This was often confused by Elves and Men with the Void that existed before the creation of Eä.[3] Sauron's spirit also entered the Void after The One Ring was destroyed.[4] It is also possible Gandalf's spirit entered the Void after his battle with the Balrog in Moria, as he "passed out of thought and time."

His paternal great-grandparents emigrated to Scotland from Ireland in the mid-19th century.[14] The remainder of his family was of Scottish descent, and his maternal great-grandparents were native Scottish Gaelic speakers from Fife (unusually, for a speaker of the language), and Uig on Skye.[15][16] His father was a Roman Catholic, and his mother was a Protestant. He had a younger brother, Neil. Connery said he was called Sean, his middle name, long before becoming an actor, explaining that when he was young he had an Irish friend named Séamus and that those who knew them had decided to call Connery by his middle name whenever both were present. He was generally referred to in his youth as "Tommy".[17] Although he was small in primary school, he grew rapidly around the age of 12, reaching his full adult height of 6 ft 2 in (188 cm) at 18.[18] He was known during his teen years as "Big Tam", and stated that he lost his virginity to an adult woman in an ATS uniform at the age of 14.
